Food in Victoria- May 18, 2007

May 23, 2007

Why stay in Seattle when Canada is just a few hours away? I’ve wanted to go to Victoria since Damon and his parents went a few years back. It turned out that Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa just outside of Victoria was a member of the Small Luxury Hotels for which we still had a gift certificate. So we booked ourselves on the Victoria Clipper, and headed to Victoria from Pier 69 in downtown Seattle. The Clipper was super convenient, dropping us off in Inner Harbour in Victoria within walking distance of the major sights.

Il TerrazzoOn a co-worker’s dad’s recommendation, we sought out Il Terrazzo. Tucked away at the end of an alley was the restaurant, featuring a terrace as advertised. Since it was a cold day they had all the gas fireplaces lit and many of the heaters on. Damon had a yummy pizza with pancetta, avocado and other goodies while I had a baby spinach salad with pieces of baked portabello mushroom, prosciutto, sun-dried tomatoes and pine nuts. The mushroom had been baked with herbed foccacia crumbs and was a nice crispy contrast to the greens.

After exploring Victoria on foot we rented a car and drove the 20 minutes out to Brentwood Bay. After relaxing in our room we went to the bar for drinks and an appetizer before heading to the restaurant for dinner.Brentwood Bay Bar

Both the bar and the restaurant have the same menu, but the atmosphere at the bar was more sports bar and the restaurant was more subdued with a nice view over the water and the sunset. Damon had a linguine with scallops dish and I had an order of mussels. Both dishes were delicious- as was the pie with ice cream. Damon had the great idea to ask for the special ice cream flavor of the day (espresso flakes) instead of the vanilla on offer. YUM!

It turns out that after 6 months on the road, we still can’t keep still. In the month since I’ve been back in Seattle, we’ve spent a weekend in Palo Alto/driving our car Silver up from California via Portland and time enjoying the Pacific Northwest.

Crab Pot!Our friend Eric and his wife Melissa passed through Seattle one night- so we went off to the Crab Pot for some tasty seafood with our friends Madeline and Baron. Despite having our party of 6 having to be split up in to 2 tables, we enjoyed our dinner of 3 types of crabs, corn, potatoes, shrimp, clams, and mussels. Yummy! Madeline, Eric, and I all met in the Philippines in 2000 as participants in Taglog-On-Site.

Evan, Lisa, Gracie, Damon and Sarah

Our friend Evan was in town with his wife Lisa, their baby Gracie, and Lisa’s parents. We met up with them near Mount Rainier and checked out Paradise. When it was time for Gracie’s nap Evan, Damon, and I hiked up Rampart Ridge, starting near Longmire. There was some snow at the top of the ridge but generally the trail was clear. The trail passed by some pretty cool trees.

New York, 18-22 April 2007

We spent the last few days of our 6 month honeymoon in New York City. While most folks tend to spend most of their time sightseeing in the Big Apple, we spent most of the time relaxing, repacking, moving our bags on the subway, and seeing Damon’s cousin in Anne of Green Gables. Here’s the New York Times review of the show. Almost as cool as seeing Piper on the stage was seeing the mob of girls waiting to get her autograph after the show.

Palo Alto

After a week in Seattle I (Sarah) headed to sunnier climes. Damon and I met up in Palo Alto to drive Silver (our car) back up to Seattle. We had an anniversary celebration with some friends and family at Maia’s house on Saturday. Who came up with the idea to have leftover wedding cake on your anniversary? Remarkably, the cake had weathered the year well in my parents’ freezer- it didn’t look like much but it was pretty yummy. Sunday we drove the 11 hours up to Portland to visit our friend Wendy before making it back to Seattle on Monday.
