March Snow

March 31, 2008

It doesn’t often snow in Seattle. In the 7 or so years we lived there we only saw it snow a handful of times. Imagine my great surprise to get to witness 2 snow storms in one week!

Capitol Hill Snow

I know, it looks like rain. Trust me, it was snow.

I thought it was strange to see snow in Seattle.  We’ve had several weeks of 50-60 degree weather in Salt Lake.  You can imagine my great surprise when I woke up to this scene this morning.

NOAA tells me that 3 inches of snow fell last night?!

Dim sum in Salt Lake City?!?

Dim sum

Our frequent trips to both the east coast and the west coast have meant that we have been managing to get our Asian food fixes outside of Utah.  Salt Lake doesn’t have a China Town like other cities and really, there aren’t that many Asians around so we were a bit skeptical about the Asian food scene.  On the recommendation of our friend Sam we headed to Cafe Anh Hong.  Most of the reviews warned that it was a place to go for the food- not the service or the ambiance.

Cafe Anh Hong did not disappoint- although the service was better than I had expected it to be.  They had all the normal dim sum staples- siu mai, ha gau, chicken feet, sesame balls and other miscellaneous versions of shrimp or pork steamed in translucent rice flour (see photo above).  The dumplings were tasty and didn’t stick together (a pet peeve of mine) and the char siu baos (photo below) were both light and filling with the barbecued pork filling.  It’s always so disappointing to have the dough be dense and pasty.

While we were there the restaurant filled up with several Chinese families and a few older Chinese men reading their Chinese newspaper on a Sunday morning.  Based on the the criteria my parents always used when choosing a new restaurant in Chinatown (only go in if it’s filled with Chinese people), I’d say we hit the jackpot.  One clue that we were still in Utah- there was only one dim sum cart serving the entire restaurant.  While it wasn’t the best dim sum we’ve ever had, it was pretty good.  For $22 for the two of us, we’ll be back to get our Asian food fix again soon.

Grapple

March 5, 2008

A few weeks ago we were up at Alta and we overheard folks calling the snow that was falling grapple. We had only ever heard the word used as a verb. Ski-bums.org tells me:
Grapple – like very small hail pellets, or like sleet, but rounder and thicker. Grapple isn’t the best snow, but it’s not the worst. It doesn’t stick to your skis or boar
d.

It looks a bit like what you get when a styrofoam cooler breaks up into small pellets.  I’m not sure what to call it when grapple falls from the sky- grappling?
